Chance-constrained optimization via randomization: feasibility and optimality

چکیده
In this paper we study the link between a semi-infinite chance-constrained optimization problem and its randomized version, i.e. the problem obtained by sampling a finite number of its constraints. Extending previous results on the feasibility of randomized convex programs, we establish here the feasibility of the solution obtained after the elimination of a portion of the sampled constraints. Constraints removal allows one to improve the cost function at the price of a decreased feasibility. The cost improvement can be inspected directly from the optimization result, while the theory here developed permits to keep control on the other side of the coin, the feasibility of the obtained solution. In this way, trading feasibility for performance through a sampling-and-discarding approach is put on solid mathematical grounds by the results of this paper. The feasibility result obtained in this paper applies to all chance-constrained optimization problems with convex constraints, and has the distinctive feature that it holds true irrespective of the algorithm used for constraints removal. One can thus e.g. use a greedy algorithm – which is computationally low-demanding – and the corresponding feasibility remains guaranteed. We further prove in this paper that if constraints removal is optimally done – i.e. one deletes those constraints leading to the largest possible cost improvement – a precise optimality link to the original semi-infinite chanceconstrained problem in addition holds.

A Sampling-and-Discarding Approach to Chance-Constrained Optimization: Feasibility and Optimality
In this paper, we study the link between a Chance-Constrained optimization Problem (CCP) and its sample counterpart (SP). SP has a finite number, say N , of sampled constraints. Further, some of these sampled constraints, say k, are discarded, and the final solution is indicated by x∗N,k. Extending previous results on the feasibility of sample convex optimization programs, we establish the feas...
متن کاملSolving Chance-Constrained Stochastic Programs via Sampling and Integer Programming
Various applications in reliability and risk management give rise to optimization problems with constraints involving random parameters, which are required to be satisfied with a pre-specified probability threshold. There are two main difficulties with such chance-constrained problems. First, checking feasibility of a given candidate solution exactly is, in general, impossible since this requir...
متن کاملDecomposition algorithms for two-stage chance-constrained programs
We study a class of chance-constrained two-stage stochastic optimization problems where second-stage feasible recourse decisions incur additional cost. In addition, we propose a new model, where “recovery” decisions are made for the infeasible scenarios to obtain feasible solutions to a relaxed second-stage problem. We develop decomposition algorithms with specialized optimality and feasibility...
متن کاملSequential Optimality Conditions and Variational Inequalities
In recent years, sequential optimality conditions are frequently used for convergence of iterative methods to solve nonlinear constrained optimization problems. The sequential optimality conditions do not require any of the constraint qualications. In this paper, We present the necessary sequential complementary approximate Karush Kuhn Tucker (CAKKT) condition for a point to be a solution of a ...

This paper presents a voltage stability constrained optimal power flow that is expressed via a bilevel programming framework. The inner objective function is dedicated for maximizing voltage stability margin while the outer objective function is focused on minimization of total production cost of thermal units. The original two stage problem is converted to a single level optimization problem v...
